Zvyozdochka shipyard to delay delivery of Indian Submarine for six months

Indian Submarine INS Sindhuvijay (S62), a Project 877 EKM diesel submarine,which recently underwent a two-year refit at a Russian Barents Sea shipyard will be delayed by at least six months says Zvezdochka shipyard spokesman. The Indian Navy refused last week to take delivery INS Sindhuvijay due to the non performance of Club-S cruise missile system. INS Sindhuvijay had arrived to Severodvinsk in 2006 for the upgrades.

INS Sindhuvijay was handed over to Indian Navy during a ceremonyheld on May 8 at the shipyard” Zvyozdochka” in Severodvinsk. The handing over was done for floating, mooring and running tests in the sea.

INS Sindhuvijay (NATO: Kilo) is built on the Admiralty shipyards in Saint Petersburg and is serving Indian Navy since 1990. The submarine has a displacement in 2,300 tonnes, length – 72.6 m, submerged speed of 17 knots, diving depth of 300 meters. The crew composes of 52 sailors, and a self sustained navigation of 45 days.
