Of UN ambassador’s and Bollywood

Yesterday, UN appointed Bollywood actresses Priyanka Chopra as Ambassador for something… Ugggg… I can’t remember. She also passed the one off statement “I am very honoured to formalize my association with UNICEF as their National Ambassador to help bring awareness for child rights and adolescence.”
Rationally, as common man, how many of us remember these Bollywood ambassadors? I asked this to one of my friends who is a die hard fan of bollywood movies, actors and actresses.
She said: “ummm.. I think Amir Khan, then, I theeeeenk Sharukh Khan.. and …… heheh I don’t dnow.”
So, I asked her: “fine, what do they represent?
She: “seriously yaaaaar, how do you expect me to remember all that?”
I insisted “but, aren’t you the the ultimate dictionary and thesaurus of Bollywood industry?”
She: “yeah, but these things are, umm.. I mean, not bollowood things.”
I myself remember just one bollowood, sooory, bollywood ambassador. The Ambassador car by Hindustan Motors. (sooory for the PJ).
Frankly, does anyone cares about these UN Ambassadors?
You know, I do happen to know one of such kind from Bollywood and it directly concerns with me. I have an Idea cellular connection and it pays this actor Abhishek Bachchan for a lot of things including environmental concern. Idea Cellular says that they will give me a certificate signed by Abhishek Bachchan, if I opt for email bills. I wrote to them and even told one of the tele callers to give me Rs 30/- discount on my bills every month instead. They can keep the certificate for themselves. Why pay the fellow? But, the point is, you see this has got nothing to do with UN.
Now, here is the gem from Priyanka Chopra
“Over the past few years, I have worked very closely with the team at UNICEF to bring awareness to a number of causes related to India’’ young and I realized that there is so much more to be done. I hope that by lending my voice I can make a difference to their lives.”
Really? How many of us know about it? Here is what UN has to say
Since beginning her collaboration with UNICEF in 2008, Ms. Chopra has also recorded a series of public service announcements championing girls’ education and celebrating the 20th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. She has also participated in a media panel discussion to promote child rights.
Really, geez!
I educated my friend “do you know Amitabh Bachchan and Sharmila Tagore have been previously promoting the children cause with US?” (I know, I know, its avaliable in the UN press release.)
She said “who cares? BTW, do you know Priyanka Chopra’s show Khatron Ke Khiladi……..”
