The defence minister today said that Kaveri engine is moving towards flight operations certification. However, the production of LCA’s will be imported imported engines as specified by Indian Air Force. The minister outlined the achievements and reasons for the delay of Kaveri Engine R&D.
He said all major engine sub-assemblies of the kaveri Engine have been tested for aerodynamic performance and structural integrity (life & safety) requirements from qualification point of view; critical sub-systems have been developed; Full authority Kaveri Digital engine Control System (KADECS) has been designed and developed; various critical technologies in the fields of instrumentation/measurement, health monitoring, data acquisition, etc. have been developed; twelve materials that include Titanium, Steel and super alloys, have been developed and type certified; Directionally Solidified (DS) casting technology and high temperature tip brazing technology for the High Pressure and Low Pressure turbine blades & vanes have been developed; and adequate manufacturing technology base has been established.
The reasons for delay in kaveri Engine R&D was due to non-availability of critical materials, viz., nickel and titanium based alloys in the country; low priority from foreign manufacturing agencies in view of the Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ) vis-à-vis the production order quantity from other engine houses; lack of manufacturing infrastructure for critical components; flying Test Bed (FTB) trials were not originally envisaged but included subsequently, based on the recommendations of Certification Agency and IAF; US sanctions imposed during 1998 affected the delivery of critical systems & components; and lack of infrastructure of engine testing and component / system level testing within the country leading to dependency on foreign agencies.
He said that the Kaveri engine testing under simulated altitude and forward speed conditions during February 2010 has been successfully completed. Another engine has been integrated with IL-76 aircraft at Gromov Flight Research Institute (GFRI), Moscow for ground and flight test which is expected to complete by October 2010.
Finally, it is a Dream come true that will make every Indians proud. The day Kaveri will take-off LCA to sky is another historical milestone in the Indian History particularly for both our Civil and Military Aviation. Very delightful moment indeed :)

Despite 20 to 30 years for research period & spending est. cost of Rs 3,000 crore from the pocket of poor people like middle class/labours/ beggars who pay taxes when they buy grocery after tightening their belt due to empty stomach, delivered the a non-breathing baby Kavery engine. GTRE & HAL trying to pass the curse on lack of facilities in India. Mr. Rao have to see actual state of affairs. India have a great leader on Space research. But GTRE /HAL are money eating firms are in need of great leaders who is able to give the required specification for a component or spare part & manufacturing procedure to other Indian firms to manufacture for them instead of blaming lack of facilities. We see China manufactured a dozen of impressive military aircrafts despite they had lack of these facilities. They struggled & succeful to certain extend. They bought Air craft Career Varyag for the money of peanuts & CLEVERLY told the Ukrainians that the ship will be used for Entertainment purpose not for military and going to make Entertainment City/park/Casinos. Now they re-built the ship(1100ft Ship) with their own technology/brain (price US$ 20 Lakhs only) in a snails pace on their dock but going to be successful. India spend US$ 2.35 Crore (Ship length 900ft) by giving our neck inside powerful Russian hands. We are forced to bend our neck and give whatever they ask. India should have clever advisers before they start the deal. If they divert this money to develop 2 way Indian Railways 4 way/6way rails(with 500 km/hr engines) India will satisfy its economy & poor people travel. Indian people are in Bullock Carts of 1940 technology. PASSING GOVERMENTS PAY NO ATTENTION TO DEVELOP INDIAN RAILWAYS. http://redbannernorthernfleet.blogspot.com/search/label/admiral%20gorshkov, http://www.jeffhead.com/redseadragon/varyagtransform.htm, http://www.defence.pk/forums/india-defence/62878-indigenous-aircraft-carrier-iac-news-discussions.html
It is pity that HAL & NAL govern by bureaucrat who does’not know any thing about the fighter plane i think time has came up to show them the way.HAL & NAL head to be govern by the millitary officer’s because they know but is good for over country Kaveri engines has become baby for the politician and bureaucrat they are just playing with it.we should not forget that ” To achieve great things two things are needed a plan and not quite enough time”.Lern this from NAZI’S.
