India and South Korea Armed forces pact for joint excercises and defense technology

Indian and South Korean defense ministers inked two MoU’s for military cooperation. The first MoU signed is for exchange of defence related experience and information. It includes visits by military and defense related civilian personnel and experts. The activities include education, training, military exercises, exchange of visits of ships and aircraft. There is also an element of cooperation in humanitarian assistance and international peace keeping activities. The MoU has a validity of five years and has a provision for its extension by five more years.

The Second MoU between DRDO and Defence Acquisition and Procurement Agency (DAPA) of South Korea aims at identifying futuristic defence technology areas of mutual interest and pursuing R&D works in both the countries. The MoU covers co- development and co-production of defence products with Indian industry through DRDO. There will be joint IPR on all the products developed through this mechanism. Some areas of immediate interest e.g., marine systems, electronics and intelligent systems have been identified as priority tasks.

The discussion between the two defense ministers covered a wide range of regional and global security issues.

Regular maritime exchanges between India and South Korea were an important aspect in the discussion. While South Korea will have better access to Indian Ocean region, the Indian Navy will have more reasons to venture into East China Sea.

  1. [...] * India, South Korea sign military cooperation pacts [...]

  2. India should also have a similar pact with Taiwan. If China can have defense ties with all of India’s neighbours then India too can have such ties with china’s neighbouring countries.

  3. its good for india. india need to be more open to private company.

  4. Also there must be armoured expercise between the two countries in which the best tanks, armoured personnel carriers are fielded. Let it include the T-90′s and Arjuns from the Indian side and let it include the K1 tanks from the Korean side. Let’s find out which tanks is the best. Is the heavy tanks in korean arsenel capable of doing well in India. Will the Arjun capable of standing against the best of the tanks? T-90 tin can is gone case. But atleast we must find out for our Arjun, so that we can improve on it and in any deployment overseas our tank can be the best tank internationally. Already it’s better than T-90′s. We must find out how it fares with the Korean tanks, the U.S tanks, the other tanks in the world.

  5. Very thoughtful indeed. A good opportunity to venture into China Sea, which needs to b explored
