DRDO suggestions to reduce depression problems of armed forces personnel

Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), a laboratory of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), had conducted two studies. One of the “Psycho-Social aspect of optimizing the operational efficiency of Security Forces to combat insurgency” during September 2000 – May 2005 in the North Eastern Region. The major outcomes of the study are:

Three main operational stressors, like fear of torture, uncertain environment and domestic stresses are responsible for most of psychological problems in various groups of Armed Forces.

Middle rank officers as compared to Jawans and Junior Commissioned Officers (JCO) were found to be more vulnerable and stressed out.

Mental disorders in the form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) have been observed in traumatized troops, which forms the basis for various somatic symptoms.

About six to nine months after the detention of captured militants is most appropriate period to change in the attitudes of youth and influence their minds towards national identification.

A strong need to inoculate and orient officers by undertaking Combat Stress Management training programmes.

Need for immediate therapeutic intervention during post-traumatic stress disorders jointly by unit leaders and professional psychologist.

There is a strong need to carry out a appropriate need analysis with repect to demographic variables of a particular region.

Another study was carried out in December 2006 on “Suicide and Fratricide among troops deployed in counter insurgency areas” and suggested a number of remedial measures to deal with stress related issues in the Army. Some of the suggestions are: liberalized leave policy, deployment of psychological counsellors in counter insurgency areas, periodical review, monitoring and analysis of stress related incidents, organizations of stress management training programmes and disseminations of reading materials on stress management in appropriate languages, etc.

The remedial measures to manage stress have been implemented in entire Army both in field and peace areas.

    I READ UR STUDY REVIEW. BUT ONE THING U VE MISSED… THATS ABOUT THE OFFICERS OF INDIAN ARMY. THEY R THE MOST SUPRESSED, AND STRESSED LOT.BUT THEY VE NO OPTION OR WAY THERE THEY CAN STRESS THEMSELF OUT.IF U WANT TO DO CORRECT AND REALISTIC STUDY THEN PL MAKE A QUESTIONIRE AND SEND IT TO ALL OFFICERS BELOW RANK OF LT COL W/O DISCLOSING THEIR IDENTITY…U LL GET A SHOCKING FEEDBACK.IT IS MATTER OF GREAT CONCERN THAT THE REAL FORCE AND LEADER OF MEN AVAILABLE FOR BATTLE IS BELOW LT COL..WHO R THERE WITH THEIR MEN THROUGH OUT THE BATTLE OR PEACE TIME ROUTINE ARE THE MOST UNDER PRIVILAGED,STRESSED AND NOT ALLOWED TO SPEAK THEIR HEART OUT IN ANY FORUM… IF DONE THEIR LIFE WILL BE MORE STRESSED. THERE IS DEFICIENCY OF 16000 OFFICERS IN ARMED FORCE AND MAJOR DEFICIENCY IS AT UNIT LEVEL. WHERE 24 OFFICERS ARE AUTHORISED AND ONLY 8 OR 10 ARE POSTED. AMONG 10, CO JUST TAKE CARE OF 1 APPT.HOWEVER 3-4 OFFR ARE OUT ON LVE/TD/COURSE AT A TIME.REMAINING 5 OFFICER LOOK AFTER THE JOBS OF 23 OFFICER..AND MIND IT NO MISTAKE IS ACCEPTED.TOP OF THAT LOTS OF LOCAL RESTRICTIONS AND WHIMPS AND FANCIES OF BOSSES ARE THERE TO COMPLY. WE ASSUME JUNIOR OFFICERS AS SOME SUPERMAN BUT TREATMENT WITH THEM IS NOT AS EVEN A NORMAL HUMAN. I VE NEVER HEARD THAT A CLASS ONE OFFICER IN CIVIL HAS EVER BEGGED FOR HIS LEAVE…AS IT IS COMMON IN ARMY. WE MUST PAY SOME THNAKS TO OUR OFFR TRG INST THOSE TRAIN OFFICERS IN SUCH RUGGUEDISED MANNER..COZ OF THAT THEY SUSTAIN SUCH PRESSURE. ABOUT OUR JAWAN..ITS ALL THE FAULT OF TRG INSTITUTES WHO EMPLOY THEM EVERYWHERE OTHERE THAN A HARD REALISTIC TRG.

    hmm, i agreed that depression is prevailing in armed forces but the need is to understand the prob of JAWAN specially, organized simple and fruitful lectures at all level and give freedom to junior to speak (catharsis) and try to solve as many prob as possible without biasedness.i think , v can many issue via this simple way.
