Indian defense minister today said that 85 MBT Arjun Tanks have been issued to the Army. He said that “keeping in view the production capacity for MBT Arjun Tanks and strategic considerations, the Government is also exercising the option for modernising T-72 tanks instead of total replacement of these tanks on completion of their life span.”
He siad that “the Army follows a philosophy of having a mix of legacy equipment, equipment with matured technology and state-of-the-art equipment. T-72 tank is not an antiquated equipment. Therefore, the Army intends to retrofit and upgrade these tanks to enhance their mission reliability and life expectancy.”
On August 2, the minister had said that, a part of the T-72 tank fleet is already equipped with high end technology night vision device which has been fully integrated and exploited. Further, the process of upgrading the night fighting capabilities with the state-of-the-art thermal imaging is an ongoing process.
The fleet of T-72 tanks is being upgraded and modernized to include the fitment of Thermal Imager Stand Alone System, advanced engines and installation of Auto Land Navigation System for Command and Control Tanks etc.

Pathetic that legacy equipment that must belong to the museum are provided to the forces to fight war. God save India, since we got such irresponsible ministers. Instead of having a good fleet of Arjun’s they want to keep legacy equipment. Where is the Army that’s crying we want next generation tanks. They can keep historical tanks and cannot induct this generation of Indian tanks. What a shame.
The Army’s phoilosophy of keeping outdated equipment is flawed. Time that they change this stupid Philosophy and induct Arjun MK1 and Arjun MKII’s in numbers to replace the T-72 and T-90′s in army service.
IF INDIA DOES NOT USE ITS SOPHISTICATED TANK ARJUN, THEN INDIA CANNOT TAKE CHINA OR PAKISTAN IN CASE OF WAR. INDIAN POLITICS IS ALMOST POLLUTED SO ITS UP TO OUR MILITARY TO TAKE AGGRESIVE ACTION.
I will blame the GOI & the Army for this apathy towards not getting modern tanks. The Army knows the stupid MoD people are again going to bungle the purchase, e.g., we got the T-90 tanks without any teeth, we had to pay separately for them, or MoD ordered the Scorpeon suns without some of the very inportamt sub-systems and now we have to pay couple more billion $$ and incurre a delay of 2 years. So, why bother to order new, it is better to upgrade old less reliable equipment instead of being held hostage to the corrupt babudom – read artillary guns.

Its looks there are some delibrate reasons to keep Arjun in the back shade and highlight the old ones ahead.
